What you can expect as a GIS Intern at Preferred by Nature:

As our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern, you'll play a crucial role in our mission. We’re embarking on implementing transformative cocoa agroforestry initiatives focused on improving the livelihoods and climate resilience of cocoa farming communities in our key project regions. In this role, you’ll actively contribute detailed desk-based spatial and landscape analyses in these diverse regions, identifying high conservation value ecosystems and assessing potential threats. Working closely with our Project Specialist, you'll also help develop GIS methodologies to be used across the countries Preferred by Nature is working in.

During your 6-month internship, you'll have a clear roadmap with specific tasks in these central areas:

  • Data collection: Gather a wide range of existing data, focusing on landscape elements related to climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem services, forest-dependent communities, and cocoa farm infrastructure in the intervention areas.
  • Spatial analysis: Conduct in-depth spatial analysis to identify conservation value and assess threats in project areas and surroundings.
  • Findings presentation: Present your findings, engage in validation, and help make decisions on potential field visits.
  • Coordination and collaboration: Collaborate with the project team and local partners for a cohesive analysis approach.

Ideal GIS Intern candidate will have:


  • Active enrollment in a higher education program in geography, geoscience, data science or any other related field.
  • Coursework or relevant experience in conducting spatial analysis using GIS tools and data.
  • Experience in using Google Earth Engine.
  • Knowledge of climate change impacts, biodiversity, and ecosystem services.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an attention to detail.
  • Excellent English communication and report writing skills.

We would also appreciate if you:

  • Have experience in programming or scripting languages.
  • Have a keen interest in environmental and sustainability issues.
